  • What are Cognitive Skills?
  • Cognitive skills are the underlying mental skills required for learning. Active skills are identified as Attention, Processing Speed, and Working Memory. These attend to, receive, sort and prioritize incoming information. Higher Thinking skills are Auditory Processing, Visual Processing, Long-Term Memory, and Logic and Reasoning.

When cognitive skills are strong, academic learning is fast, easy, efficient, and even fun. When cognitive skills are weak, academic learning will be a struggle, or impossible. Cognitive skills are the foundational and essential tools for learning. Cognitive skills can be improved through proper training.

The current education worldwide generally assumes that cognitive skills are fixed, that each student is stuck with the skill level given to them at birth. Fortunately, extensive scientific research and successful clinical programs have proven beyond any doubt that cognitive skills can be strengthened.

  • What is Cognitive Skills Training?
  • Cognitive skills training is training our brains with a variety of brain exercises designed to help work out specific cognitive abilities. The principle underlying cognitive training is to help improve “core” abilities, such as attention, memory, problem-solving. Comprehensive cognitive skills training is not only the most effective, but also the most ef?cient way to increase learning or reading skills.

Education success depends upon good teaching but also depends upon how well each student learns. Appropriate cognitive skill training can help to build a strong skill foundation that will enable any student to achieve their full potential. It’s not about studying more or working harder.

Learning success comes with building new neural networks in the brain to allow information to travel faster, more efficiently, and with greater precision. Reading, math, language, and motor skills improve when the mind and body can work together. Typically, signi?cant gains can be achieved through cognitive skills training in only 8 to 15 weeks.

  • How does Cognitive Skills impact Our Learning?
  • The cognitive skills and processes used to learn are different than the information that is accumulated in our Knowledge Bank after learning. Cognitive skills process new and recalled information. Our Knowledge Bank stores and distributes information we have already processed.

  • Why must cognitive skills be trained, not taught?
  • Just as you cannot learn to play the piano with 12 weeks of classroom lectures (you will have to actually practice playing), cognitive skills grow stronger with training, not teaching or tutoring. Cognitive skills training must also feature speci?c methods if it is to be consistently effective. Studies have shown that one-on-one training is the best vehicle to deliver essential training methods.

A clinically-based, comprehensive online program also offers effective, undivided, individual attention. Cognitive skill training has been very successful in raising standardized test scores, eliminating the need for special services, and creating confident, successful learners. Unfortunately, most schools cannot provide brain training since they have state mandates to follow which only look at the content material, not at the learning process. This is why supplemental education is rapidly growing in cognitive/brain skill training.
